Supporting The Hague’s artists with spaces to create, work, and exhibit
Founded in 1991, Stichting Ruimtevaart is one of The Hague’s longest-standing artist initiatives, dedicated to securing spaces where member artists from diverse disciplines and working practices can both work and exhibit.Since its foundation, Ruimtevaart has sought to provide affordable workspace for artists while initiating projects in the field of visual arts. Over the years, the initiative has managed and developed a number of buildings across The Hague, creating spaces for artistic production, presentation and exchange.
After nine years based at the former Gaspar de Coligny school on Van Heutszstraat, Ruimtevaart took up residence in a school building on Goudenregenstraat in 2000. In part through Ruimtevaart’s initiative, the building’s designation was changed, eventually enabling the creation of around ten live-work studios. During this period, Ruimtevaart also began discussions with the municipality that ultimately contributed to the development of the De Constant Rebeque site into DCR, a permanent creative hub for the city’s arts sector.
Since early 2018, Ruimtevaart has been based at Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3. The building provides space for the initiative to further develop as an interdisciplinary platform for visual art, design, music and cinematography. Its activities include SuperB, Ruimtevaart Muziek, an exhibition space and studios, supporting a diverse community of artists and artistic practices.
